Gale's Technical Studies for Double Bass

Volume 1

Technical Foundation Studies for Double Bass: Volume 1.
Composed by Thomas B. Gale.

The first volume provides an introduction to the "4 finger" technique for the advancing bassist who wishes to expand his or her repertoire of skills.

To meet the demands of modern playing, most bassists need to develop at least TFS1p18.GIF (9080 bytes)two styles of fingerings. The most common method is based on the Simandl or "closed hand" system that is comfortable for lyrical passages and most technical ones as well. However, problems occur in demanding, quick shifting passages which often become blurred to the listener and tiring to the player.

The four finger or "open hand" system greatly reduces the number of shifts, makes for clean, well articulated fast playing and minimizes the portamenti that are sometimes audible during shifting. To become proficient with the open hand takes considerable practice and a great deal of patience. The exercises of Volume 1 are designed to aid the needed practice and encourage the required patience.

Volume 1 provides a rational and methodical course for the understanding and study of the extension position...

I'm delighted to see more material on the 4 finger technique, and the use of the third finger in the lower positions. Thomas B. Gale's books are very beneficial and user friendly.

Technical Foundation Studies for Double Bass: Volume 2.
Composed by Thomas B. Gale.

This volume includes ample thumb position practice for the developing bassist. Carefully constructed exercises help engage the student in combining the normal closed hand, open hand (Volume 1), pivot, and thumb TFS2p14.GIF (7449 bytes)positions in smooth execution of difficult passages.

The treble clef is used predominately in this volume, although toward the end a review of the tenor clef is included. Following each instructional page is an Etude page, each providing a musically interesting example of the techniques studied.

A cassette tape with the 9 Etudes of Volume 2 is available as played by virtuoso bassist Mark Alison Morton.

The principal strength of this excellent and important manual is the presentation of left hand fingering systems, when to employ each, and how to seamlessly move from one to the other.
