Gale's Practical Studies for Double Bass

Written and arranged by Thomas B. Gale; edited by Mark Alison Morton; endorsed by the American School of Double Bass.

Practical StudiesThis book is designed to review all elementary fundamentals for those students that have some gaps coming out of school class lessons, and follows with more work 'up to the octave.' it includes bow planes, string crossing, cross-string slurring and the introduction of the independent 3rd finger in positions 4 and 5.

Practical Studies Part 1 covers the basics of cross-string bowing, rhythm, slurs and hooked bowing. Exercises include familiar tunes that aid in intonation.

Part 2 includes a refresher on tuning by harmonics, mixing rhythms, Portamento, and more use of positions 4 and 5. Special exercises aid in practicing smooth bow crossings using "bow planes." Some introduction is also given to the treble clef, pivoting, open hand technique and playing in several key signatures.Practical Studies - Sample Page

This entire book will help build confidence, diminish the fear of shifting, empower young bassists to feel less compelled to cling to first position. ... Better yet, Practical Studies could be used to avoid bad habits and misconceptions before they occur.

Each of these tunes is carefully chosen and cleverly set, fingered, and bowed to teach definite skills and ideas. ... Another strength of this book is the even-handed treatment of both the left and right hands.

"I believe this is the first book that handles chromatics in half / first position in a way that makes sense," Thomas Gale, author.
