Dr. Morton's Torturous Exercises is a collection of thirty extremely demanding "calisthenics" for bass. These exercises were collected from teachers, adapted from other instruments, or newly created over a period of twelve years. They are not études. They make no attempt to make melodies or music. Because my students and I have limited practice time, I want us to progress as quickly as possible by gleaning the most benefit from the precious time available. As a result, this is a compilation of exercises where each one focuses on a particular technical challenge, distilling it down to its essence. The purpose of each exercise is stated clearly so that the a player will know what skill he or she can expect to acquire. These 32 pages include two or three exercises each for tone, vibrato, left hand velocity, shifting, on-the-string bow strokes, off-the-string bow strokes, staccato, string crossing, and miscellaneous exercises.
